ABOUT:

100 Photo Stories About The Armenian Genocide

Editor: Hayk Demoyan

100 known and unknown photos, presented in this book, are irrefutable proof of the crimes committed in the Ottoman Empire against humanity and civilization. They contain unique information about the Armenian Genocide in terms of design and iconography.

The history of the Armenian Genocide is documented by tens of thousands of documents, including diplomatic reports, eyewitness accounts, written memoirs and oral histories of survivors. Besides all this, hundreds of photos taken by Armenian and foreign photographers in the years of the Genocide are also rare documentary evidence.

The photo, where the episode and the particular moment are immortalized, has a valuable and important role to have a general and not individual sensory perception, about historical facts and events. From this point of view, visual materials have a particular value among other documentary materials. The immortalization of episodes of wars and mass killings gives people the opportunity not only to get an idea of the events of more than a hundred years, but also to become for a moment the eyewitness of these episodes and to feel the recorded moment.

The first photos of mass killings and violence against Armenians were particularly prevalent during the Hamidian massacres of 1894 to 1896. Photos made a few days after Armenian massacres in Erzurum in 1895 by the journalist of the English illustrated newspaper "The Graphic ", were the first to be published in the press and republished in various foreign periodicals, often on the front pages of newspapers. During this period, many photos and graphics were made with the scenes of the massacres of the Armenians of Constantinople and their consequences.

In the photographic collection of the massacres of the Armenians, the episodes of the destruction and massacres in the provinces of Adana and Aleppo in April 1909 take their unique place. The atrocities of Cilicia were recorded on hundreds of photos taken by Armenian and foreign photographers, a few days after this horror. Some of them have even been published by international postal services as postcards.

The Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust and other genocides have been documented by thousands of photos. If in the case of the Holocaust the pictures with horrible scenes were basically taken and kept by the Nazi soldiers, then most of those on the Armenian Genocide were made by soldiers and correspondents of the Russian army, as well as by German soldiers and affected officials in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War

These photos are from different collections. Those of Armin Wegner, German officer, Victor Pichman, Austrian biologist, Bodil Biørn, Norwegian missionary, Frank Danielian and others deserve mention. The photo collections of two Danish armenophiles Maria Jacobsen and Karen Jeppe, the Syrian-Armenian photographer Vardan Terunian and those of the US Relief and Rescue Committee in the Middle East also give a fantasy of the Armenian Genocide, its dimensions and terrible consequences.

From year to year, new photos revealing the Genocide of the Armenians and its consequences, appear and allow to face the tragedy. It is ironic that Turkish criminals were forced to give pictures of their bloody atrocities to Armenian photographers, almost irreplaceable throughout the Empire, to publish them.

Years ago, during the enriching work of the MIGA collection and the creation of the new exhibition the author of these lines discovered and enriched the museum's photographic collection with several new original photos. Most of these photos, unfortunately, had been forgotten and removed from circulation, while the terrible scenes of the Genocide recorded in these photographs give us the rare opportunity to speak in language of the real facts in our uncompromising fight against Turkish denialism. .

The question of the works of the photographic iconography of the Armenian Genocide, the validation of its units, the verification and the coordination of the sources is a particular subject. The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute continues to work on this occasion.

The hundred photos included in this book have been chosen from thousands, according to the exceptional stories that allow the reader to get deeper information about the tragedy struck the Armenian people.

The photos presented in this book are exclusive proofs of the genocidal policy of the Turkish government against the Armenians. They are also irrefutable and undeniable evidence to condemn this heinous crime, to meditate, to act and talk about the elimination of its consequences, as well as to prevent such crimes in the future.

The Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide—also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, by Armenians, as the Great Crime—was the systematic destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I. It was implemented through wholesale massacres and deportations, with the deportations consisting of forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees. The total number of resulting Armenian deaths is generally held to have been between 1 million and 1.5 million.] Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Greeks, and some scholars consider those events to be part of the same policy of extermination. It is widely acknowledged to have been one of the first modern genocides,: as scholars point to the organized manner in which the killings were carried out to eliminate the Armenians, and it is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust. The word genocide was coined in order to describe these events. The starting date of the genocide is conventionally held to be April 24, 1915, the day when Ottoman authorities arrested some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. Thereafter, the Ottoman military uprooted Armenians from their homes and forced them to march for hundreds of miles, depriving them of food and water, to the desert of what is now Syria. Massacres were indiscriminate of age or gender, with rape and other sexual abuse commonplace. The majority of Armenian diaspora communities were founded as a result of the Armenian genocide. The Republic of Turkey, the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, denies the word genocide is an accurate description of the events. In recent years, it has faced repeated calls to accept the events as genocide. To date, twenty countries have officially recognized the events of the period as genocide, and most genocide scholars and historians accept this view...
