This outstanding Pink Lustre China Bowl was manufactured as an "IN MEMORIAM to H.R.H. PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, daughter of KING WILLIAM IV"in 1819.
HISTORY:
Princess Charlotte was the only (legitimate) child of H.M. King George IV (died 1830). The Princess died in 1821 after giving birth to a stillborn baby. The story goes that all of England mourned the presumed heiress to the throne, and many items were produced to express the loss of this beloved Princess.
This bowl has three black and white decal transfers -- two on the outside of the bowl and one inside the bowl, on the bottom.
One exterior image shows Princess Charlotte as a lamb on a pedestal being heralded into heaven by six angels/trumpeters. The other exterior image merges earthly and heavenly scenes, with Britannia seen as in total mourning. There is a tombstone that shows, "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE".
Inside the bowl, at the bottom, is Britania in mourning, and seated beside the monarchal lion. A sailing ship is in the background.
(*) (Subtle "Y" shaped hairline) Please look at the photos that show the star-shaped hairline fracture through the image of Britanna mourning the death of Princess Charlotte. It is more prominent from the underside of the bowl as the image of Britannia hides some of it. It does not display as prominently when looking at the bottom, but it is there.If you have further questions about this bowl, please contact me.
